Rowan University’s Newly Created Marching Band Gives All Students the Opportunity for Self-Expression
How did Rowan’s Marching Band “Pride of the Profs” come to be? In this video, you will hear from the Dean of the College of Performing Arts Richard Dammers, benefactor John H. Martinson and Director of Band Megan Cooney. Check it out to see how they brought their vision to life.
When benefactor Mr. John H. Martinson heard that Rowan was considering creating a marching band, he became really interested in the idea. He has always loved the performing arts industry. They began engaging with the idea and spent the last year preparing for the “Pride of the Profs” marching band debut. After a national search, they found their Director of Band, Megan Cooney, who has prior experience in starting a marching band from scratch.
On September 22nd, 2023, Mr Martinson attended one of the marching bands outdoor practices at the Richard Wackar Stadium. “That was a thrilling evening” says Mr. Martinson. “I really enjoyed the spirit and the enthusiasm of bands, and to be part of it was quite exciting.”
Pride of the Profs gives students an inclusive opportunity to engage with music beyond their high school careers. Most of the students in the marching band do not study music as their major, and all students are welcome to apply to join. “Not only does the marching band provide performance opportunities, but also the opportunities for student leaders to grow as future educators.” The marching band is hoping to grow their program over time, giving more students the chance to pursue music.
This is Rowan, we dream big!
