Communication Studies Alumna Leverages Her Education to Propel Her Business Idea Forward
Meet 2018 Rowan University graduate Megan Hilbert, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a minor in advertising. She is here to share with us her journey of starting “Red’s Rolling Restaurant” on wheels.
Knowing that the program that I put four years of hard work and dedication in is also willing to support me as an alumni and as a young entrepreneur has been amazing for me.
At first, Megan wanted no involvement in this business because her mom owns trucks. It was too close to home, too ordinary, and she wanted to dream big. With her mom’s business, Megan would be left to do the dishes and all of the tedious tasks that came with owning a business on wheels. However, as she approached her own graduation with a communication studies degree, Megan was inspired by her mom’s commitment to running a business and realized she could blend the foundation of what her mother taught her with the foundation she created for herself by earning her college degree.
Megan knew she didn’t want to work for anyone and bought a truck from her mom to start her own restaurant on wheels. She never envisioned coming back to Rowan, but now finds herself back on campus frequently, as an alumnus and a vendor. Megan handles a lot of in-house catering for athletic events and runs a snack stand during the football games.
Megan takes pride in the diversity of her truck providing anyone the chance to pick up a spatula and cook, especially women in the culinary business.
