Faculty chairperson & alumni answer: How does a world languages degree benefit students?

The Department of World Languages at Rowan University, led by Dr. Marilyn S. Manley, is committed to preparing students for active participation in language exploration and cultural understanding. The department offers a diverse array of courses and academic programs in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Quechua, Russian, and Spanish.
With a focus on meeting students’ needs, the department encourages students to participate in language placement testing and credit authorization exams, allowing them to skip lower-level courses and accelerate their language learning journey.

Dr. Manley’s journey into Spanish was inspired by the diverse Spanish-speaking community in Boston, igniting her passion for language learning through immersive experiences. She advocates for the importance of genuine language learning over relying solely on technology, emphasizing the impact of language proficiency on personal and professional growth. Through her experience teaching Spanish, linguistics, and Quechua, Dr. Manley aims to expand students’ linguistic horizons and cultural awareness, creating connections beyond borders.
One of the key aspects that Dr. Manley highlights is the transformational experience of studying abroad. “I think one positive challenge for students is to study abroad.” Dr. Manley acknowledges that many students and their parents feel intimidated and nervous about the prospect, drawing from her own experience when she studied in Spain despite her mother’s initial fears. “It was really scary for them because they weren’t used to having me be so far away … but when students come back, they’re transformed, gaining huge boosts in independence, professionalism, self-reliance, and resourcefulness.”
Acacia Byrne, a Rowan alumna who graduated with a BA in Modern Languages and Linguistics, Spanish, in 2016 said that she would recommend any incoming student to study abroad. “Some of the best joys, experiences, immersion, and learning opportunities come from there.” She also encourages new students to “say yes to everything you can. even if it’s outside your comfort zone.”

Dr. Manley strongly encourages her students to embrace the opportunity to study abroad. “Studying abroad is one of the most powerful, transformational experiences a student can have,” she says. The Department of World Languages ensures that the coursework completed abroad counts toward the students’ degrees. The department supports and promotes these opportunities, recognizing the profound, positive impact they can have on students’ personal and academic growth.
According to Tom Pratz, a Rowan alumnus who graduated with his BA in Spanish, Modern Languages & Linguistics and P-12 Education in 2017, MA in Spanish Language & Culture in 2019 and EdD in Educational Leadership in 2024, “Studying abroad is the best way to learn or improve a language. Immersion in the language and culture allows for conscious or unconscious learning of customs, practices, and perspectives, which is especially beneficial for those planning to teach the language.”

Choosing to pursue a degree in World Languages at Rowan University opens up a world of possibilities for students. The diverse language offerings and practical learning experiences available in the department not only enrich students’ academic experiences but also set them on a path toward dynamic and rewarding career opportunities. With a strong focus on meeting the growing demand for language teachers and professionals with cultural competencies, the Department of World Languages at Rowan University provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s world.
Tom mentioned that “Since [he] majored in Spanish education and [he] aspired to teach high school Spanish, Rowan directly prepared [him] for a career in world language education through the College of Education and the College of Humanities & Social Science. Coursework in the College of Education was geared toward world language education and provided [him] the opportunities to visit local schools and complete observations.”

Furthermore, Dr. Manley stated that the proximity to employment opportunities in New Jersey and the Delaware Valley further enhances graduates’ career prospects, with industries ranging from financial institutions and legal agencies to hospitals, hotels, and federal agencies seeking multilingual professionals.
Tom emphasizes that being able to communicate in another language allows people to connect with others from different cultures and enhances travel experiences. “Rowan helped [him] improve [his] abilities from the start.” By offering a comprehensive language education that prepares students for a wide range of career paths, the department continues to shape global citizens ready to make a meaningful impact in today’s diverse and interconnected society.
