According to Rowan University computer science department head Vasil Hnatyshin, Ph.D., “We prepare our students to be problem solvers, innovators, and leaders in the field of computing.” He continues, “With a diverse curriculum that balances theory and hands-on experience, small class sizes, and mentorship from expert faculty, our program provides a strong foundation for success in a variety of career paths.”

Career Paths: Where Can a Computer Science Degree Take You?

A computer science degree opens the door to an array of exciting and lucrative career opportunities. Here are just a few paths you could pursue:

  • Software Developer – Design and build applications, from web platforms to mobile apps.
  • Data Scientist – Analyze and interpret complex data to inform business decisions.
  • Cybersecurity Analyst – Protect networks and systems from security breaches.
  • AI & Machine Learning Engineer – Develop intelligent systems that power self-driving cars, recommendation engines, and more.
  • Cloud Computing Engineer – Work with cloud infrastructure to ensure efficient and scalable solutions.
  • Game Developer – Create immersive gaming experiences for entertainment and education.

Computing professionals are in high demand across industries such as healthcare, finance, entertainment, and government. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer and information technology occupations had a median annual wage of $104,420 in May 2023, significantly higher than the median annual wage for all occupations, which was $48,060.

Two Alumni Success Highlights

Steve (Mac) McKeon, a 1998 computer science graduate, illustrates one possible career trajectory. Mac started his career as a technical designer for web interfaces. Early in his career, he grew into roles such as technical lead, manager, and senior developer. Twelve years after graduation he earned the title of director of technology. Now, he successfully builds and leads numerous companies, serving as CEO. Through MacNerd, he focuses on Web3 applications. With MacguyverTech, he blends engineering and user experience best practices to drive technology and innovation.

Joe Albanese, a 2021 graduate, is a software engineer. According to his LinkedIn, his professional focus is “making big drones fly better.” About his time employed as a software engineer with FreeFly Systems, he says: “I take care of everything from programing actual boards within the drone, to managing how the different boards communicate with one another.” He adds, “I would say the thing I like the most about computer science is getting problems and solving them.” When he was a student here, Joe was a part of Phi Sigma Pi honor society, a student government association senator and ski club.

Why Rowan?

Through career fairs, industry events, and guest lectures, Rowan students build valuable connections in the industry. Many students land jobs even before graduation, thanks to the hands-on experience they gain throughout their studies.” In addition, summer research programs and independent study projects allow you to hone in on areas of interest, to build your experience and your resume.

According to the department’s webpage: “One of the key benefits of studying at Rowan is our emphasis on experiential learning. Students engage in internships, co-op programs, and research projects that provide practical industry experience before graduation. Our partnerships with local and national tech companies open doors to networking opportunities and job placements.

With an ABET-accredited program, students graduate with a degree that meets rigorous industry standards, ensuring they are well-prepared for a competitive job market.

Another advantage of Rowan’s computer science program is its flexible learning options. Traditional in-person classes and online learning formats accommodate students balancing work, education, and other commitments.
