For most people, combining baseball, entertainment, and an electric personality might seem impossible. But for Rowan alumnus Matt Graifer, better known as The Young Professor, it’s just another day at work.

As the Chief Potassium Enthusiast (yes, that’s a real title) for the wildly popular Savannah Bananas, Matt brings unmatched energy to every game. He’s the face you’ll see hyping up crowds, introducing crazy skits, and keeping the party going. But long before entertaining thousands of fans, Matt’s journey began at Rowan University.

Discovering His Path at Rowan

A 2008 graduate and first-generation college student originally from Rahway, NJ (Union County), Matt majored in psychology, fascinated by human behavior and how people think. In addition, his experiences outside the classroom, namely at his student worker job with Campus Recreation, taught him that work can also be fun.

“Working at the Rec Center really changed things for me. It was my first job where I realized you could enjoy what you do,” Matt explains. “That work-hard, play-hard mentality shaped everything I do today.”

This mindset laid the foundation for a career built on engagement—whether through academics or entertainment.

The Unexpected Career Shift

After graduating, Matt became a college professor, teaching kinesiology. At just 25, he loved the opportunity to be in front of students and make a difference. But when his program was unexpectedly cut, Matt found himself at a crossroads.

“Losing that job was one of the hardest moments in my life. I had a family to support and no clear path forward,” Matt recalls.

But rather than letting that setback define him, Matt saw it as an opportunity. He started hosting trivia nights to make ends meet, and something clicked. “It turns out, I love performing. Those trivia nights led me to ring announcing, and from there, doors just kept opening,” Matt says.

What could have been the end of one career turned into the start of something completely unexpected and exciting.

How Matt Found the Savannah Bananas

The Savannah Bananas are no ordinary baseball team. Known for their over-the-top entertainment and fan-first philosophy, the Bananas blend sports with entertainment, creating an unforgettable experience. Matt knew he wanted to be part of it.

After reading Jesse Cole’s book Find Your Yellow Tux, Matt knew he had found his people. “I reached out to Jesse and told him I was a fan of what they were doing, and I’d love to be involved,” Matt says.

The persistence paid off. Matt was invited to a Bananas game, and when the regular announcer couldn’t make it, Matt got his big break. “I brought my suit just in case, and as luck would have it, I stepped in that night. Now I’m part of the show full-time.”

Behind the Scenes with the Bananas

As the in-game host for the Bananas, Matt’s role is about more than just keeping the crowd entertained. He’s involved in building the entire experience from the ground up.

“With the Bananas, we’re always trying something new. Every game is different. Whether it’s a wacky in-game promotion, a crazy skit, or a new way to get the fans involved, we’re constantly experimenting,” Matt explains. “We don’t just want to entertain—we want to blow people away.”

From managing the Banana Nanas (the team’s senior citizen dance squad) to working with the pep band, Matt is involved in nearly every aspect of the show.

Dreaming Big: Sharing the Stage with Legends

One of the most surreal moments of Matt’s career came when he shared the stage with wrestling legend John Cena. “I’ve gone from announcing small wrestling matches to being on stage with one of the biggest names in sports entertainment,” Matt says. “It was incredible.”

That moment symbolizes how far Matt has come—and it’s proof that perseverance pays off. “Every small gig led to something bigger,” Matt reflects. “Now, I’m sharing the stage with legends.”

Advice for Rowan Students and Graduates

Matt’s journey is anything but conventional, and he hopes to inspire Rowan students and alumni to take risks and pursue their passions, no matter where life takes them.

“If you want something, just go for it. It doesn’t matter if the path seems unconventional. Take risks, work harder than everyone around you, and never be afraid to stand out,” he advises.

Looking Ahead: The Future is Bright

Looking to the future, Matt sees no limits for what’s next for the Savannah Bananas—or his career. “We’re always pushing boundaries, always experimenting. In the next ten years, I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re performing on the moon,” he jokes.

From Rowan University to stadiums filled with thousands of fans, Matt Graifer has proven that with creativity, persistence, and a little bit of flair, you can make your dreams a reality.
