TRANSFERmation Tuesday: Psychology Major, HR Management Minor John Tully

Today, we speak to Psychology major and Human Resources Management minor John Tully. John, from Ramsey, NJ (Bergen County), is a transfer student from Bergen Community College.

What are your professional goals? And how is Rowan helping to support you in those goals?

I am going to Georgetown in the fall for a master’s in Human Resource Management. After that, I hope to work in global HR management. Rowan has Psychology majors take a professions and practice class, that is where I learned about HR master’s programs and realized that is the direction I wanted to go in. Also, I was able to add a Human Resources Management minor to my program which helped me stand out from other applicants to the programs I applied to.

How does your field impact the world? What impact would you like to have on the world in your field?

HR is a crucial part of business and has major influences globally. HR has the ability to influence workplace happiness, motivation and profitability. HR also creates a safe and inclusive workplace while ensuring legal compliance. I would like to work in global HR management by designing human resource programs that are able to be applied across multiple cultures.

What inspired you to choose your major?

I was originally a bio/mathematics major and took an Intro to Psychology class to fulfill an elective requirement. I fell in love with psychology because of how diverse and interesting it is. It is an amazing field, which can be related to nearly any topic of interest. I knew after taking that class that I wanted to change my major and pursue a career in some way related to psychology.

As a student from North Jersey, how did you become aware of Rowan University?

I read about Rowan while researching colleges to transfer to. Rowan is a well-ranked school with classes related to Industrial Organizational Psychology. That made it stand out from other schools.

How long is your trip/drive “home” to North Jersey?

Around two hours.

What are some of the benefits for you, living this distance from home?

I am far enough away from home where things feel different, but still close enough where visiting friends and family is easy. I wanted a change of scenery but I didn’t want it to be too difficult to visit family.

What are a few interesting or new things (to you) about Rowan’s South Jersey area that you would share with future out-of-state students?

Mostly that South Jersey is very different than North Jersey. They’re like different states. South Jersey has a slower, more relaxed energy. Also, South Jersey is beautiful. It isn’t as crowded or urbanized as North Jersey. I always enjoy driving around and just taking in the open space and beautiful farmland.

What off-campus, local fun places do you recommend students check out?

There is so much good food here and it is so much cheaper to dine out than in North Jersey. There are also vineyards and a brewery near by. Rowan hosts a lot of events. Plus, Philadelphia is only about 20 minutes away so you have the ability to have city life if you want.

Why did you choose to transfer to Rowan University?

Rowan is a well-ranked university with an impressive psychology program taught by respected experts in their fields. Also, Rowan offers classes about Industrial Organizational Psychology, which is my area of interest.

7 Students Share Why They Like Magnolia and Chestnut

Two of Rowan’s on-campus residence halls, Magnolia and Chestnut, have a lot to offer. We spoke to a few of the residents to see what they like about living there. 

Leena Nesby, a freshman resident at Chestnut, says: “I like Chestnut because the lake is just outside my window, so I like my view. I like that it is really close to Holly [Pointe Commons], which is where my friends and I go to eat a lot of the time. I do like the courtyard, the benches and all the bike racks night there.” Leena is a Nutrition major from Tabernacle, NJ (Burlington County).

Griffin Roughgarden, a freshman Entrepreneurship major from Caldwell, NJ (Essex County), says that Chestnut is a quiet place to sleep, study and live.

Christopher Maestoso, a freshman Exploratory Studies major from Fairfield, NJ (Essex County), says that Chestnut is the perfect temperature once the heat of summer passes.

Amanda Holzlein, a junior Human Resource Management major from Jackson, NJ (Ocean County) and a Resident Assistant at Chestnut, says that it feels like home.

Bryce McMaster, a freshman Explorartory Studies major from Southampton, NJ (Burlington County) and a resident of Magnolia, says that he likes that he only has to share his bathroom with three other residents and that he has his own room, which he really likes.

Andrew Mercurio, a freshman Music Education – Instrumental from Kendall Park, NJ (Middlesex County) and a resident at Magnolia Hall, says he likes that it sits right in the middle of where all his classes are and Rowan Boulevard. He likes that convenience.

Samuel Poku, a freshman Music Industry major from Old Bridge, NJ (Middlesex County), says: “The main reasons why I do like living at Chestnut are because it is a very cozy environment and quiet. Even though it is an older dorm it still has a great the environment with the people in and around it. I like the location, too, because it is between everything and easy to find everything. The Resident Assistants also do a very good job and make sure students are safe.”

Rowan’s Business Certificate, MBA Programs an Ideal Pairing for Marc Castrillon, Future HR Pro

Today we feature Marc Castrillon, a Rowan Global student pursuing his master’s degree in business administration (MBA). Here, Marc talks about his Rowan experience and how completing the Business Certificate of Graduate Study launched him into the MBA program and, soon, a dream career. 

Marc Castrillon didn’t envision himself in a Rowan MBA cohort when he first entered the Rohrer College of Business as an undergraduate just five short years ago. Yet by this spring, he will have amassed three degrees, one certificate of graduate study, two field experiences and numerous professional connections through a student leadership role. 

He’s now confidently on his way to a career in human resources management. “If I knew what I know now, two years ago, or a year ago, I would have had even less hesitation and been even more excited for the graduate program,” he says.

Marc’s graduate journey began with a major change as a business undergrad. He arrived to the Rowan as a Marketing major. In speaking with his sister, whose career is in human resources, and others in the profession, Marc discovered he was interested in the same line of work. After taking HR-intensive courses, Marc added the Human Resources Management major to his undergraduate degree in Management.

With a path in motion, Marc initially researched human resources advanced degrees to build upon his knowledge base; but he discovered other area HR master’s programs were “three or four times the price and a lot of extra requirements.” 

Casting a wider net, Marc found an option with Rowan Global’s Business Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS), which checked off a few boxes. He took the required five courses and, upon admittance into the MBA, transferred the credits into its larger, broader business degree. The accelerated pace of just 15 credits also meant Marc could complete the program quickly, which he says he felt compelled to do soon after graduation. 

“At the time, I was already on a roll with school, and I was performing at a really high pace and getting good grades. I didn’t want to go and work for a few years and then come back and lose that momentum,” he says.

Through the COGS program, students who apply and are accepted into Rowan’s MBA may enter without a standardized test requirement  — an admissions component Marc also appreciated. “I knew that if I went through the COGS program, and I performed as well as I had been doing in my undergraduate, I wouldn’t have to take the GMAT. And I did not want to take off three to six or … however many months it would take for me to prepare for that test. So that was a major factor in me deciding to go straight into my graduate program,” he explains.

Marc’s choice to pursue the broader Rowan MBA paid off in other ways as well; he’s taken classes outside his human resources track and notes faculty are quick to deliver on new courses based on student feedback he may not have had access to in a more narrow program. 

“I think how wide the scale the classes are in the MBA program really shows how much the school cares about its students,” he says. “They recently added entrepreneurship courses that were not previously available — and they became available because a lot of students have been asking for entrepreneurship-type courses.” 

The College of Business has tapped Marc to serve as the inaugural Director of Community and Membership for the Rohrer Graduate Student and Alumni Advisory Board. According to its website, “Members are actively engaged in academics and shared community connections that elevate the student experience and the reputation of Rohrer Graduate Programs.” 

In this new role, Marc has leveraged his business skills to lead recruiting, outreach and engagement efforts. He also co-manages a lively LinkedIn account for MBA and M.S. in Finance students and alumni. He enjoys his new position as it closely aligns with his future goals. 

“It’s really good for someone who is working within human resources recruiting and retaining membership,” Marc says. “That’s a big component of it — networking events. For now we’re trying to work on online networking events. But I would [also] love the opportunity to create a networking event in person.” 

A pandemic has not slowed down Marc’s year-long internship experience with the healthcare company LabCorp, where he is learning to determine executive and sales compensation for employees at the vice president level or above both domestically and abroad. 

“I don’t know if I want to stay in compensation; there are other parts of human resources that I want to get into. So following my MBA, I want to get SHRM [Society of Human Resource Management] certification,” Marc says.

Zeroing in on his future, Marc is acutely aware of the importance networking and professional connections have played in his academic life. Until entering the graduate program, he says: “I didn’t realize how much farther [faculty] are willing to go with you to make sure that you succeed. 

“Even if it’s outside of their office hours, they will sit with you after class and they’ll explain a problem to you. And they make everybody feel welcome … the whole graduate program feels very inclusive, which to my understanding with my friends who are in other graduate programs, I don’t know if they can say the same.”

TRANSFERmation Tuesday: Human Resources Management Major Vanessa Finnan

Today’s TRANSFERmation Tuesday features Vanessa Finnan, a junior Human Resources Management major and transfer from Rowan College at Burlington County. Vanessa is from Cinnaminson, NJ (Burlington County), and lived on-campus in Townhouses prior to campus closure due to COVID-19.

A moment where I felt inspired and confident that I was in the right field for me is taking specific classes that enlightened me and bettered my understanding of what my career path is going to be. Taking required classes for your major and enjoying them and benefiting from them is a great feeling.

Honestly, I chose Rowan because it was more affordable than some other schools and because it was still close enough to home. The campus is easy to navigate and the housing is above average in my opinion, compared to most colleges. I knew I could get a good education that was within my means. 

What are you most looking forward to at Rowan next year?​

Next year, I am looking forward to taking more major specific classes, and getting involved as much as possible for my senior year!

TRANSFERmation Tuesday: College of Business Double Major Christina Wilgus

Today’s TRANSFERmation Tuesday features Christina Wilgus, a junior transfer from Rowan College at Gloucester County. Christina is a Management and Human Resources Management major who commutes to Rowan from Woolwich Township, NJ (Gloucester County).

How would you tell a fellow student interested in your major that they’re choosing a worthwhile field?

College of Business student Christina wears a Rowan sweatshirt and sits on the front porch of her home.I would tell a fellow student interested in Management and Human Resources Management that they’re choosing a worthwhile field because there are no limits to what you can do. Majoring in Management equips you to work in every type of professional setting. I chose this field for the never-ending opportunities. Every industry has a business side, so there are no restrictions on the fields you can work in. I also find myself learning real-life lessons that are beneficial outside of business, that I may not learn in a different major. I often find myself in these instances during my law and finance classes. 

In high school, I had thought about majoring in Human Resources because I love interacting and communicating with others. However, I was nervous to commit to a major that was a bit narrow, so I decided to begin college as a Management major. But, when I transferred to Rowan they made it possible for me to do both without any extra classes. I am especially thankful for this opportunity because I never expressed to anyone at Rowan my interest in HR, but they sought me out. I received an email stating that many Management majors may be able to fill their electives with HR classes and fulfill the requirements for both majors. I was lucky enough to be one of those cases. If it wasn’t for the employees at Rowan actively looking to improve the quality of their students’ education, I would have never thought to pursue this opportunity. So, if you are a transfer student or freshman Management major I strongly suggest you consider this opportunity!

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned in your major this year?

The most interesting thing I learned about my major this year is how to adapt. Everyone is currently in the same situation with learning online because of campus closures due to Covid-19. For me, and many business students, we still have group projects that have remained group projects. This has forced us to adapt by communicating via text, FaceTime and Zoom. I believe this experience has better prepared us for the event of collaborating with co-workers on a project who may not live near us. In those situations, we will be forced to work together solely through technology. These instances also occur outside of a global pandemic, so it is a great skill for us to pick up and master during this time.

Why did you choose Rowan?

I chose Rowan for the great education I could receive so close to home. They had just built the new, beautiful building for the Rohrer College of Business and I had heard nothing but great things about Rowan’s business program. My brother graduated from Rowan in 2012 with a degree in Management so I also got to see first-hand how great the school was and how much they were expanding. I am only in my second semester at Rowan, but I am confident that I made the right decision to continue my education here. Rowan has become so much more than our local university, and I am glad I get to be a part of its student body.

What are you most looking forward to at Rowan next year?​

Next year I am looking forward to getting more involved. I came from a small high school and then went to community college, and I was very involved in both schools. This past fall I was adjusting to being at a bigger school and didn’t realize just how much there was to get involved in.

My goal for this semester was to join a few clubs and be active on campus but unfortunately, that will have to wait until next semester. I look forward to my senior year. Rowan has provided me with so much help and guidance in preparing for my career, so I can’t wait to get back on campus in the fall!
