Sports Communication & Media majors start with foundational courses, including but not limited to:

These courses introduce the principles of communication, journalism and digital storytelling, all within the unique context of sports. Students develop skills in interviewing, research and multimedia production while learning about the ethical and cultural considerations in sports coverage.

As students progress, they take upper-level courses such as:

  • Sports Journalism

Experiential learning plays a key role in this major—students complete internships with sports teams, media outlets, athletic departments or event organizations. Between Rowan’s proximity to major media markets and its partnerships with sports organizations, the program provides a wide range of opportunities for students to pursue.

Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience creating sports content, producing live broadcasts and managing media coverage. A capstone or senior seminar often serves as the culmination of the major, allowing students to showcase their work, reflect on their growth and prepare for their careers.
