Even the busiest students have some downtime. There’s lots to do on campus, from Rowan After Hours (RAH) events to classes at the Rec, but sometimes you just need a change of scenery. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a quick afternoon trip or a weekend getaway, you’re bound to find something to do within an hour or two of Glassboro. What RU going to do with your free time? Here’s some ideas.
Beach – Trying to soak up some sun? Atlantic City is just an hour away from campus. Don’t feel like making the drive? Student University Programmers (SUP) has day trips to Wildwood in the beginning of every school year, and it’s a steal at just $5 a ticket.
Major Cities – Students from North Jersey usually think of New York as the city, while South Jersey natives think of Philadelphia. Luckily, Rowan is close to both. Rowan After Hours (RAH) provides a shuttle to and from Philly on Friday nights, while SUP offers a $5 New York City trip every December.
Shopping – Need some retail therapy? Two of the nicest malls in New Jersey are within half an hour of campus. The Deptford Mall is about 15 minutes away, while the slightly farther (but bigger) Cherry Hill Mall is 30 minutes away.
Live Music – If your favorite artist is going on tour, you’re in luck, because Glassboro is within two hours of four common tour stops. Philadelphia and New York are the obvious ones, but check out Atlantic City and Holmdel, NJ (home of the PNC Bank Arts Center) as well. But remember, you don’t have to leave campus for live music. Artists like American Authors and Mike Posner perform at Hollybash every year.
21+ – For the 21+ crowd, there’s always Landmark and Chickie & Pete’s around campus. But if you’re looking for something different, Philly and Atlantic City have the best nightlife.
Employment – Whether you’re trying to land your first internship or just want to make some extra cash on the weekends, there’s lots of opportunities nearby. Deptford, Philly, Cherry Hill, and Mt. Laurel are all common places for Rowan students to find employment. Pro tip: check out ProfJobs if you need a lead.
Public Transportation – Maybe you’re an underclassman who doesn’t have a car on campus, or maybe you just don’t feel like paying for gas. As long as you’re a student, you qualify for a discount on an NJ Transit pass through Self-Service Banner. This will get you almost anywhere in the state (and some places out of state) that you want to go.
