Full time student taking on five to six classes a semester. Employee with H&R Block. Secretary of fraternity Alpha Phi Delta. Bowling coach and student tutor. How does sophomore finance major Davon Dickson, of Logan Township (Gloucester County) balance it all?
“It’s a lot of work, but I know it will pay off. My experiences are fun and rewarding. I’m receiving a great learning experience by working in my field as a sophomore already,” says Davon Dickson.
Davon attended the Finance and Accounting Expo, which occurs each semester in the Chamberlin Student Center ballroom, during the fall of his sophomore year. Here, he was introduced and networked with multiple companies and agencies in his field. After connecting with professionals and applying for many different jobs, Davon accepted an internship/part-time job with H&R Block.
“They paid for my course to become a tax professional, and now I’m doing families’ taxes every day when I go to work Tuesday through Saturday,” Davon says. Not only does Davon get the real-world learning experience, but this position builds his resume, gives him three credits towards his degree, pays hourly AND has secured him a job at the company when he graduates in two years.
“Next year, H&R Block will pay for my training to become an enrolled agent to represent people against the IRS. At 19 years old, this is a pretty cool perk.”
Davon says he is extremely grateful that he attended the Rowan Finance and Accounting Expo last semester. In fact, the position at H&R Block is his second opportunity he received thus far. Last semester, Davon was a business administration intern working alongside the at Rowan College at Gloucester County.
“Everyone should go to the finance expo. You could be set for your professional job with gaining this experience. People should take advantage of these opportunities. These expos happen every semester.”
Davon lives a busy life, waking up at 7 am and hustling non-stop until 9 pm some nights, but he sure is getting everything he can out of his college experience here at Rowan University. From academics and social clubs to work and real-world experiences, Davon is grateful and stoked about his position he has received with the help from Rowan University.
