Physical Wellness Beyond the Gym: A Helpful Guide for College Students

Being a full-time college student and navigating life on your own can make it challenging to balance academics, social commitments, and personal responsibilities. In the midst of it all, maintaining your physical wellness can feel overwhelming. There’s a common misconception that physical wellness is only achieved by going to the gym and working out. However, our physical wellness is not defined by gym sessions alone; it’s about adopting a broader lifestyle that includes regular movement, healthy eating habits, stress management, and many other aspects that contribute to overall well-being. Here are some ways you can care for your physical wellness while on campus:

1. Join Group Fitness Classes

Rowan University’s Rec Center offers a variety of group fitness classes that cater to different interests and fitness levels. From Candlelit Yoga and Meditation sessions to high-energy Cycling classes, these group activities are a great way to stay active, meet new people, and find a workout that fits your schedule.

2. Take a Meditation Walk

Rowan University’s Meditation Walk, located on the north side of campus, provides a serene environment to unwind and connect with nature. Taking a mindful walk allows you to reflect, reduce stress, and appreciate the beauty of campus, making it a simple yet effective way to enhance your physical and mental well-being.

3. Prioritize Adequate Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining your physical wellness, yet many college students fall short in this area. According to healthpromotion.uga.edu, college students average only 6-6.9 hours of sleep per night, leading to sleep deprivation. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to support your body’s recovery and improve your overall health. Even with busy schedules, prioritizing rest is essential.

4. Commit to a Healthy Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet can significantly impact your physical wellness. Simple habits like eating three balanced meals per day, staying hydrated, limiting unhealthy snacking, and reducing the intake of alcohol and tobacco products can help sustain your energy levels and keep you feeling your best.

Physical wellness goes beyond the walls of the gym. By incorporating small, manageable changes into your daily routine—like attending group fitness classes, enjoying meditation walks, prioritizing sleep, and eating healthily—you can nurture your physical well-being even with a busy college lifestyle. Remember, taking care of yourself is the foundation for thriving in all other areas of life.
