Joining a sorority wasn’t part of the plan for one Rowan University student—but it quickly became one of the best decisions she made in college. She shares how Greek life helped her build meaningful friendships, get more involved on campus and find a supportive community away from home.
College Greek life is seen differently by everyone. I certainly did not think it was for me and I said I would never join a sorority. Well, that was fall semester and I am now a new member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. I absolutely love it and now I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I didn’t join in September. As an out-of-state student I’m really glad to have this opportunity to meet new people and have fun.

Changing My Perspective on Greek Life
Before going out for Alpha Sigma Alpha, I had many doubts about the entire thing but my best friend, who was all about joining, talked me into going to the first event to meet the sisters with her. That night, as I walked in and began talking to each sister, I instantly felt so comfortable and happy with this group of girls. As the week went on this feeling grew bigger and bigger. Me, the girl that never seen myself joining a sorority because I didn’t want to pay for friends, suddenly never wanted to be a part of anything more.

Finding a Sisterhood
My mother didn’t want me to join a sorority because, like any other parent, would never want me to be hazed but in my sorority there is not even a thought in our minds of physically or mentally hurting any sisters because it’s not something any of us would do to someone we love and want to be sisters with.
That Friday I got a bid to become a sister of Alpha Sigma Alpha. I was so filled with happiness that I screamed because I was one of the six girls that were chosen to be new members. I’ve never felt so much love and happiness from a group of girls than I did on Bid Day since then I’ve had a feeling of ongoing joy.
Getting Involved at Rowan
These past few weeks have been so exciting with events and opportunities left and right. Being in a sorority expanded my involvement with things on campus. I’ve met more people than you can imagine in the couple weeks that I have been in Alpha Sigma Alpha. Being a new member of a sorority makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop looking at all my new sisters and all the opportunities I have on and off campus.
