3 Rowan RAs Share Their Favorite Programs
Resident Assistants, or RAs, are tasked with creating programs to connect residents with each other and the greater Rowan community. Each program is designed specifically and intentionally by the RA of the floor to promote a sense of belonging in the residence hall. Here are some programs that RAs loved to host for their residents.
Junior Keianna Williams, an RA in Chestnut Hall, shared her favorite program titled “Self Reflection.”
“I displayed a mirror outside of my room and then made a heart full of sticky notes. Each resident was asked to write something they loved about themselves in a sticky note displayed on the wall. I then handed out tiny pocket mirrors for them to keep. I told them that every time they opened the mirror, they should say something nice about themselves. This program helped promote self-esteem and self love. I also loved that it included Rowan Thrive, a wellness initiative on campus attributes of purpose.”

Sydney Ramos, a junior RA in Mimosa Hall, shared that her favorite program that she has done is a Black Lives Matter Brave space.
“This was a program that encouraged an open discussion on issues surrounding racial injustice in our communities. It also was a space where those who did not know much about the BLM movement could understand what it was and gain information and resources to have a better understanding as to why the BLM movement is so important. I had a decent outcome with residents, and they were happy to be able to have a discussion on issues that sometimes are hard to talk about. I was even interviewed by The Whit for a featured article about my program.”

Alyssa Salera, a senior RA in Holly Pointe Commons, described her favorite program that combined fun with important conversations about relationships.
“We had a Bachelor finale watch party. My residents all loved the show, both my male and female students, so we all got together, snacked on a bunch of food and desserts, and talked about the show and everything it encompassed. I loved seeing how excited they got about who the star chose to get engaged to, as each of my residents had a personal preference. We then talked about toxic relationships and the importance of mental health in regards to how it pertains to the show, they were all so involved in the conversation! It was the most I’ve heard some of my residents speak and be engaged in all semester, so it was great seeing them come out of their shell.”

Meet Transfer Profs: Psychology Major Sara Brooks
Meet incoming transfer Prof Sara Brooks. Sara is a Psychology major originally from Orlando, Florida who transferred from Rowan College of Burlington County. She shares why she chose Rowan and what she’s looking forward to!

Welcome to Rowan! Could you share with us one thing you are looking forward at Rowan University?
I am looking forward to completing my bachelor’s degree in Psychology at a school that has progressive outlook on mental health and mindfulness.
If you are from out of state, why did you choose a university not in your home state? Why Rowan?
I grew up in Florida, and when I moved to New Jersey after getting married, I was lucky enough to find RCBC and enroll in their 3+1 program, which has given me the opportunity to transfer into Rowan University for my senior year and complete my bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
What is one hobby, activity, sport or club that you’re involved in that you’d like to continue at Rowan?
One [activity] that I look forward to becoming a part of is Rowan Thrive, especially in their Emotional Well-Being program. Stress and anxiety is something that all students face, and having resources that can help in learning how to navigate these emotions is important for everyone to discover their best self.
Is there anything you’re hoping to discover about yourself at Rowan? Grow a new skill? Try a new interest? Starting a new activity, sport or club?
I am really looking forward to exploring more in Student Services and learning how I can be of service to more transfer students like myself who are coming into a new university and the opportunities that are available.

What majors are you considering and why?
I am a senior psychology major due to my natural interest in learning about why people are the way that they are. I currently work as a Behavioral Health Technician at an alcohol and drug treatment center working toward completing a certification as a Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor. Being able to complete my bachelor’s degree at Rowan and continue on to a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology is my goal, where I will focus more on dual diagnosis aspect of addiction.
Did you tour Rowan or attend any virtual events? If so, which ones, and what did you think?
Due to COVID being very present in my time of transferring to a university, I have only been able to attend virtual events and I have really enjoyed them. Being able to schedule Zoom advising sessions and talk with an advisor one-on-one has been so helpful in planning my future goals.
Do you have advice for other transfers who haven’t committed to a school yet?
Not to focus too much on where you want to transfer schools to but why. Look into schools that offer programs that you could see yourself being a part of after graduation and that have programs that you could see yourself being a part of.
Where are you going to live next year?
Commute from home.
What is one thing about Rowan itself that you liked?
I really liked that they offer so many courses in Psychology that focus on research and the study of behavior, especially mindfulness, and that they offer a Philosophy track as well.

Living with Loss, But Not Staying Lost
Nearly one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, Tatyana Bell, a senior Biological Sciences major with a pre-medical track, shares her first-hand account of grief, love and resilience.
Throughout life we always hear the words “expect the unexpected.” However, during your final semester as a senior in college, you don’t expect that unexpected event to be the loss of your parent.
As we find ourselves in a pandemic, this unexpected event has sadly become the new normal for young individuals.
During winter break, my family and I were all diagnosed with the coronavirus, in which it took the final breath of my father at the age of 45 years old.
On Jan. 4, 2021 I had to say that last and final goodbye through a glass wall. The last touch that was given to me from my father, was not physically from him, himself. That last touch was given to me by a doctor. As I watched a red line drag across the screen, and in a very faint voice she read the final time and hugged me tight.

Moving forward often seems less promising when someone close to you is no longer there. You often fight for that voice and that presence to magically reappear. You find yourself feeling guilty when wanting to move on with your own life, because knowing that your loved one is no longer able to share those happy moments with you, it makes those moments seem less rewarding at that given time.
These emotions continue to build as time goes on. However, these are all the normal feelings that one will endure when dealing with grieving.

Grief and love are two words that mirror one another. Because it is love that makes us grieve. I am here to say to you that even when life is not as beautiful as it was before, we most hold onto that love.
When you feel that tight feeling in your body that just wants to be released with screams, those are the memories that keep replaying in your mind. The same memories that give you comfort in knowing that, that individual is with you forever.
It seems diabolical when one expects you to live when you’re enduring so much pain inside. But finding your purpose in life makes every day much easier. Giving up has always been the easy way out, but coming so far as a college student, we cannot make that the answer because we were lucky enough with another chance.
I remind myself every day that when life seems unfair, I must continue forward because when I become a doctor, I owe that hug to a family that was just like me. The family that had to move on, and the family that will miss their Dad forever.

Love is so beautiful, but we often get reminded that it is also very painful. However, healing is mandatory for all. The timing is all up to you, but know you are never alone.
