First Year Voices: History Major Abbigail Ealer
Today, we feature Abbigail Ealer, a first year History major from Washington Township, NJ. Abby is in the Honors program and a mentee of the Bantivoglio Leadership and Service Training (BLAST) peer mentoring program, which pairs upperclassmen with incoming Honors students to help guide them through their first semester in Honors and at Rowan. Abby speaks with us about her experience in the program and her first year of college.
What was the transition to college like for you? How did you push through any challenges?
I was definitely nervous. This was the first time where I’m going to school with people I don’t know. I’ve gone to Catholic school my whole life, so from grade school to high school I’ve known everybody. It was very weird going to classes like American Government where most of the students were upperclassmen and I didn’t know anyone.
On your busiest day, what responsibilities do you find yourself juggling?
Wednesdays are definitely my busiest day of the week. I have three classes and I have BLAST at night. As a commuter, I drive all the way to campus for my classes during the day, then have to drive back home at night. My BLAST group gets out around 7:30 p.m., so I don’t get back home until late. It’s really hard to get any work done that day.
What are the three classes you have that day?
I have Western Civilization at 9:30 a.m., American Government at 12:30 p.m., then Honors Comp II with Prof. Flocco at 2:00 p.m. I have a break in the middle of the day between classes and BLAST and I usually spend that time with my sister (who is also a Rowan student) or with my friends.
What have you enjoyed most about BLAST?
Honestly, friendships are the most valuable things. The mentors give us really great and helpful advice, but I’ve made some really great friends that have been super supportive and helpful. I’ve talked to them regularly outside of our group after finding out that we have classes together. They’ll even walk me to my car after our meetings. They always invite me to come with them to different events on campus, which is really sweet and inclusive.
How are your mentors?
Our mentors are great and they are also becoming my really good friends. I think it’s helpful to have friends who are upperclassmen because they can serve as a guide to us younger students.
Tell us about a moment that made you feel like Rowan was a good fit for you?
There was this Honors event that I went to where we were able to meet the deans of our college. I’m a history major, so my college is the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. I met this girl at the event who was in the same college. She overheard me talking about how I was interested in Museum Studies, which happened to be an area of interest for her as well. She said to me, “I’m doing the same thing! Let me get your number,” and she spent thirty minutes just giving me all the information she could about the program and typed it all up in a google document. That moment made me realize that this university isn’t just a school. It’s a community. People want me here, they want to help me succeed. Not just faculty but the students as well. It was just a really wonderful moment and made me feel like I belonged.
What advice would you give to a high school student about choosing the right college?
Go with your gut. That’s what I did. I almost went to community college to save money, but I just felt like that wasn’t the path for me, so I came to Rowan. I don’t think if I went down any other path that I would be as happy as I am now.

First Year Voices: Radio/Television/Film Major Sincere Silvera
Today we talk to first-year student and on-campus resident Sincere Silvera. Sincere is a Radio/Television/Film (RTF) major from East Orange, NJ (Essex County). Sincere is a first-generation and EOF student.
What do you like about living on campus?
Well, I live in a single room. It’s pretty good, you know, I can just do whatever I want in my room. I don’t have to ask permission for nothing, nothing like that. I don’t have to ask somebody, “Can I have a person over?” I can have somebody over whenever I want.
How are you enjoying your classes so far? Are you taking RTF classes or just general education classes?
I am [taking RTF classes]. One is Foundations and Media and that one you explore the technological side of it, like this is what a camera angle is, this is what a shot is, this is what a frame is, this is the science behind audio waves and you know, frequencies and stuff. And then I have [Applied Media Aesthetics: Sight, Sound And Story] and you know, all that good jazz. So it’s like, how do these things create emotion? How does this camera angle make you feel and things of that nature? So I’m loving that and then all the rest of the classes, they cute, you know, I’m just trying to get through.
What about what expectations did you have for Rowan before you got here?
Well, that’s a good question. I expected it to be a social environment where I could meet new people and have lots of different conversations, conversations I probably never would have thought I would ever have. I expected to make connections and learn some things as it relates to what I want to do moving forward with my life.
Have you been able to be social and meet new people?
I definitely have. There are many opportunities, especially on ProfLink, where you find out the different events going on like karaoke — so you know Imma show up to the karaoke, I’m gonna show out. Cooking classes, movie nights, different little interesting things.
What was your favorite event that you’ve been to so far?
I’m gonna say karaoke [Prof’s Spotlight] because I really enjoyed myself. I had a really good time at karaoke. I could express myself on a stage and show my little performance side a little bit. That was good. I’m not just in the audience. I’m gonna be on the stage with a microphone over my mouth going off. I last did Nicki Minaj’s “The Night is Still Young.” It was an amazing experience.
Was there an experience or a moment at Rowan that made you feel like this is home?
I actually want to say no, but in a good way. Because at home … there’s not as many fun things and events or opportunities to do things like that. And here there is. So I’d like to say that this is very different from home, and I’m having a lot more fun here.
Were you nervous to start at Rowan?
Yes. I could say there were nerves in certain areas. I wasn’t nervous, like, in the sense of, “Oh, I’m like, so scared to like, you know, go out there. I’m not going to do nothing.” That wasn’t me. I was like, “Ok, I’m excited.” I turned any nerves into excitement if there were any nerves. So I was more excited than anything else. But if I was nervous about anything, I probably was a little nervous about whether I chose the right major for what I want to do with my future, because that’s like, what’s most important to me?
Final thoughts?
Even though I feel like it might be easy as a freshman, or a first-generation student or whatever, just going into college and experiencing that whole like situation with so many people, the events, the organizations, the clubs and everything might throw a person off. I think that at the end of the day, even though you do want to experience and you do want to have fun, and I’m all about it, at the same time, I think it’s important to manage that. Yes, I can be a very social person. I can have friends and things of that nature. But I cannot let that take over my life. I cannot be thinking about that 24/7. I have to also keep in mind my passion, what I want to do, the type of education that I want, as an individual. So sometimes, you know, not everybody’s gonna like you so you don’t want to think about, “Oh, what friends am I gonna make? How am I gonna make them?” every day. Sometimes it’s like, “ok, maybe I don’t need any friends.” Maybe I’m gonna just go to this event and sit down because I want to be there, or maybe I’m going to get up on the stage not because I want to impress people, but because I want to get on stage and express myself and have a good time. I feel like that if there’s anything that I want to say about being a first-year student, it’d be that.

First Year Voices: Noah Garcia
Today we speak with Noah Garcia who is currently an undecided major (exploratory studies). So far Noah has been enjoying being in school and plans to continue to keep up with his school work while getting more involved on campus.
What do you like about living in Chestnut Hall?
It’s the best looking residential building on campus. 100%. I think it’s way nicer than Holly. The fact that it’s from 1984 is cool. Holly is cool but it’s like a hotel. This building’s from 1984 and we’re living here in 2020.
Have you thought about joining any clubs or organizations on campus?
I’m interested in joining a fraternity.
Are your classes remote or hybrid and how has that adjustment been?
They are all remote except one class is hybrid. And the adjustment was definitely not the easiest but I think the Zoom classes are much more productive than I thought they would be.
What are you looking forward to for the rest of this year?
Finish off the rest of the semester good with grades and keep enjoying the college life. It’s going pretty good and I plan on keeping it that way.
Any advice to other freshmen?
Write everything down because there’s a lot of responsibility that hits you at once and it’s easier to remember everything that way.

First Year Voices: Exploratory Studies Major Christopher Maestoso

How do you like living in Chestnut?
It’s been good so far. The beginning was tough because it was really hot but now the temperature cooled down.

I have been looking at fraternities but I haven’t looked at any other groups or organizations on campus.
Are your classes remote or hybrid, and how has that adjustment been?
All my classes are remote right now [for fall 2020] and the adjustment really hasn’t been that bad, still getting used to it a little bit.
What are you looking forward to for the rest of this semester?
The cold weather coming up.

You should submit your homework early.

How do you like living in Chestnut?
It’s really good, actually. It’s pretty quiet, it’s not really a loud place, there’s lots of amenities. It’s kind of the perfect location on campus.
Have you thought about joining any clubs or organizations on campus
Yeah I plan on joining a fraternity and maybe some clubs but the club fair I don’t think happened this year because of COVID. So hopefully next year I’ll look into a lot of those things.
Are your classes remote or hybrid and how has that adjustment been?They’re hybrid. I like the fact that I can choose whether or not I go in or if I’m tired one day I don’t have to go in. It’s kind of nice being able to do it remote if I want to go home.
What are you looking forward to for the rest of this year?
I’m still just meeting new people, creating my schedule for next year, figuring out who I’m living with, stuff like that.
Any advice to other freshmen?
It was stressful coming into college but don’t stress about it. It’s nothing crazy, it’s like doing high school just not at home.

I like it! I just moved there from Chestnut! I live by myself. It‘s so nice. I got the whole set up.

I’m navigating right now. I eventually do want to join clubs, but I’m just starting to figure things out. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what options I have here music-wise because I do sing!
Why did you choose Rowan?
Honestly, I had a lot of friends who came here pre-COVID, so I would always visit last year. It’s close enough where I can go home if I need to. I like the vibes here too. Everyone’s really friendly, and I like the set up of the campus!

How did you two meet?
Shayla: We met each other through a Theatre Snapchat group chat!
How are your dorms? Have you met your RA?
Lennon: I live in Magnolia! I’ve met my RA and I’ve met a few of the girls, we’ve said “Hi!” The courtyard is super pretty.
Shayla: I live in Holly Pointe. I love it there! AC is great. The dining hall and Starbucks are really convienient too. My roommate and I have met some people in our pod too. One of our friends is on the same floor as us!
Looking to join any clubs?
Shayla: Definitely! I need to look into it some more. I was just waiting to get settled in and stuff, but I definitely want to check it out.
Lennon: I don’t know yet! I haven’t delved into any clubs yet, but I really want to join the musicals.
Why Rowan?
Lennon: Rowan is actually the only school that I visited, and I ended up loving it! I felt like everyone was very friendly. I felt like it had hometown feels. That was a big thing for me.
Shayla: I really loved their theatre program here. Everyone seemed really nice and encouraging and not that sense of competition that I got with other schools. Also, I just fell in love with the campus here. My cousin also went here!

How do you like Rowan?
Jenna: I like it! It’s actually really fun. They’re offering more stuff than I thought they were going to. We went to some of the activities right here on the intramural field.
Maria: I love that they’re still doing activities for everyone here. I also feel like they’re taking a lot of precautions, and it makes me feel a lot safer.
How are you meeting new people and making friends?
Jenna: I met most of my friends from people on our floor. There are only eight of us on the floor, but we all have each other and our group-chat so we all hang out with each other!
How do you like living in a dorm?
Maria: I love living in a dorm. It’s actually a lot of fun. I was nervous at first, to have the responsibility of living on my own, but I’m actually having a lot of fun.
What are you looking forward to at Rowan?
Jenna: I’m looking forward to actually having in-person classes and meeting our professors.
Maria: I’m looking forward to having more in-person classes and meeting my classmates!

I was going to do the Tennis Club, but they aren’t meeting I guess because of COVID, so I guess I’ll do that next year.
Are your classes remote or hybrid, and how has that adjustment been?
I’ve had a mix of some online and some hybrid.
What are you looking forward to for the rest of this semester?
I’m hoping that more of my classes will be in person and there will be more events.

Today, we speak to roommates Chris Voyantzis and Bekim Krkuti, who live on campus in Chestnut Hall. Chris is an Engineering Entrepreneurship major and Bekim is a Supply Chain and Logistics major. They’re both from Freehold, NJ (Monmouth County). They tell us more about why they chose their majors and what it’s like living on campus.
How did you two meet each other?
Bekim: We’ve been friends for a while. We went to the same high school together!
Why did you choose Rowan?
Chris: It was close to home. There are things that are appealing to me. The campus looks nice the student center is cool and there’s a lot of things to do here.
Why did you choose your major?
Chris: I was just looking for something that gives me a problem solving aspect of learning. Also, a more traditional education at the same time.
Bekim: I chose my major because my dad was into it and he explained some things to me and decided to put my foot into it too.
What do you like about living in Chestnut?
Chris: Its gonna be warm inside in the winter!
How’s campus been for you so far?
Chris: It’s been good! It’s been fun meeting new people, walking around and doing what you want to do.
What do you like about campus?
Bekim: I like how there’s a lot of people out and about … having fun, playing basketball and stuff like that!

First Year Voices: Chemistry Major Spencer Feldman
Today, we speak to freshman Chemistry major Spencer Feldman from Livingston, NJ (Essex County). Spencer is currently residing on campus in Holly Pointe Commons. He tells us a little more about why he chose Rowan and what he likes to do on campus.
Why Rowan?
I chose Rowan because of the location. Also, when I came here I felt that this was a true college campus. It felt easy and simple here. It’s not a huge campus, it’s not a small campus. It’s just enough!
What do you like to do on campus?
Whenever the courts are open, I run around and play basketball. If Holly Pointe To-Go is open, I’ll get food or I’ll go get food at Grill Nation. Other than that, I hang out with my friends outside, walk around campus and go to the Gazebo. We’re always hanging outside because of [Covid-19], we can’t really go indoors together too often. We also go to [Rowan] Boulevard and there’s outdoor dining so there’s a lot to do!
How’s living in Holly Pointe?
It’s nice living on the first floor. The ceilings are higher and the food is really close too, so that’s always nice!
What do you like about Rowan so far?
I actually like how it’s still alive on campus right now. There’s a lot of other colleges that are kind of empty right now. At Rowan, there’s still a lot of things happening, and we can still get the college experience.

How did you two meet each other?
Mia: They were just walking by one of my friend’s dorms and we had the door open and they just said “Hi,” and that’s how we met.
Why did you choose Rowan?
Analiz: My sister goes here too! She’s a sophomore. Last year, she would always invite me onto campus last year and she’s also a basketball player and I would always go to her games. I had to choose between here and TCNJ, and I chose here because I ended up really loving it here.
Mia: I’m on the cross-country track team. I like the program here. I like the campus in general in comparison to other colleges as well. I was supposed to choose a campus in Indiana, but I ended up choosing here!
How has it been being freshmen at college during pandemic?
Analiz: It was helpful having that first week where we didn’t have to worry about classes. It was good to actually figure out where we need to put our masks on and figure out the rules around here. It was actually really helpful.
Mia: Just learning the campus in general, too. Walking around and learning where our classes are and stuff was helpful, too!

Sammy: It’s kind of a funny story actually! I was originally from New Jersey, which is pretty funny. We went to the same high school. She was friends with one of my friends. She originally thought I was annoying … but three years later, we became friends and now we’re here!

First Year Voices: Journalism Major Austin Ahart
Today, we speak to Austin Ahart, a freshman Journalism major who currently resides on campus in Holly Pointe Commons. Austin tells us more about his on-campus experience.
How is living in Holly Pointe?
I love Holly Pointe, it’s beautiful!
Have you met your RA?
I have! My RA is super supportive. He’s been really awesome, to be honest. He’s helped me a lot throughout the move-in process, and he’s made me feel very welcome.
What’s your favorite on-campus spot to eat?
I love eating at Chef Jet! The food is great, and to be honest, the people working there are pretty great too.
Any advice to incoming freshmen?
Take it patiently. In terms of trying to absorb everything, I really recommend just being patient.

First Year Voices: Musical Theatre Majors Ben Helbert and Connor Shields
Today, we speak to freshmen Musical Theatre majors Ben Helbert and Connor Shields! Both out-of-state students, Ben is from Williamsburg, VA and Connor is from Holland, PA. They live on campus in Holly Pointe and Mimosa Hall. Here, they tell us more about their time at Rowan so far and why they like living on campus.
How did you two meet each other?
Ben: My friend Leslie made a Facebook group chat. We got together through that chat but then decided to make a separate Performing Arts Snapchat group chat too.
Connor: So, that’s how a lot of us met each other beforehand through that. Now, here we are!
How do you like campus and New Jersey so far?
Connor: I love it here. I don’t want to go back home!
Ben: New Jersey is different than I expected. The cars are a lot louder here, but other than that, it’s pretty similar!
How are classes going?
Ben: It’s going great! I had my voice lesson. I got to meet my voice teacher and figure out how I sound. It was good! At the moment my classes are online, but hopefully they will move to Hy-flex soon.
Where are you living on campus, and how do you like it?
Ben: I live in Holly Pointe. I like that Holly Pointe is colder, its so nice and I love the dining hall attached to it! I also love hanging out around Rowan Boulevard.
Connor: I live in Mimosa! I love living there. I like the vibe of it. It’s so nice that it’s right in the middle of campus, so I can just say “It’s a 5 minute walk, let’s go get something!”

First Year Voices: Psychology Majors Katyana Rodriguez and Anaisis Santos
Today, we speak with two freshman Psychology majors, Katyana Rodriguez and Anaisis Santos. They’re both from Salisbury, Maryland and are currently residing on campus in Chestnut Hall. They tell us more about their time at Rowan and their favorite spots on campus.
How did you two meet each other?
Anaisis: Well, we actually met in middle school. We’re from the same place in Maryland!
Have you met your RA?
Katyana: I like my RA, she is really nice!
Are you interested in joining any clubs on campus?
Anaisis: I’m really looking forward to joining clubs. I would really like to check out some more Psychology clubs! I like Psychology because I like to study the human mind. I think it’s interesting.
Katyana: If I find any clubs that are interesting to me, I’ll definitely look into it and think about joining.
What are your favorite spots on campus to hang out or eat?
Katyana: I usually eat outside the Student Center or right outside my dorm building.
Anaisis: My favorite spot is Rowan Boulevard, I like going over there!

Today, we speak to Jalen Baptiste, a freshman Physical Education major currently residing on-campus in Chestnut Hall from Hackettstown, NJ (Warren County). Jalen tells us about living on campus and more about his first year so far.
How do you like on-campus housing?
I’m living in Chestnut. Chestnut’s not bad, though, because I live by myself in a double.
Are your classes completely online or hybrid?
Right now, all my classes are online, but I think some of my classes will switch to in-person hybrid hopefully soon!
Thinking about joining any clubs?
I’m thinking about joining a fraternity in the spring.
Any advice to incoming freshmen?
If you do come to Rowan, try to get into Holly Pointe! It’s really nice there.

What is one way you made friends this year?
I met my friends when I stayed in my dorm and when I started my first classes at Rowan.
What is something you’re looking forward to at Rowan next year?
Next year, I want to make more new friends and have more experiences.
What would you tell a future student who is interested in coming to Rowan?
Find a mentor who can lead you to the field you are interested in. Set a target for your path, then do it step by step and you’ll reach what you want!

First Year Voices: Abigail Riehman Reflects on Normal Days at Rowan
Today’s (FRESH)man Voices features Abigail Riehman, a psychology major from Norristown, PA who lived in Mimosa Hall until COVID-19 shut down the campus.
What did you most enjoy your freshman year at Rowan? I enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. Also experiencing living on my own for the first time and doing it with everyone who is also in it for the first time.
Could you share with one happy moment you had with friends, professors, or other members of the Rowan community that made you realize Rowan felt like “home”? One of the first times I realized Rowan was my home was during the first month of school, I had a completely normal day, went to class, went to lacrosse practice, did some homework, but I also ate dinner with friends and hung out in one of our dorm rooms. At the end of the day I was going to bed and I realized, I just had the most normal day and I could not have been more happy. I felt content, safe, and at home.
What advice do you have for future freshmen looking at colleges right now? My advice would be to trust your gut and listen to others. No matter if you’re stuck between two schools, different majors, etc… Ask for other opinions, take it in and then listen to yourself.
What are you most looking forward to next year at Rowan? I am so excited for new classes and I am looking forward to getting more involved. I am a part of the Women’s Lacrosse team and I plan on joining more clubs and programs Rowan has to offer.

First Year Voices: Juleigh VanDyke Reflects & Looks Forward to Sophomore Year
Today’s (FRESH)man Voices features Juliegh VanDyke, a Theatre Arts major from Williamstown, NJ (Gloucester County), who commutes from home.
What did you most enjoy your freshman year at Rowan? I think the one thing I enjoyed most about my freshman year was getting to know the people I have become close with and finding my place on campus. I am surround by such a great community of people at Rowan and they have made me feel so welcomed and loved.
Could you share with one happy moment you had with friends, professors, or other members of the Rowan community that made you realize Rowan felt like “home”? I do live only 15 minutes away from campus so I commute. It was hard making friends the first semester I won’t lie about that, but after I found my place on campus I was never home. I was always out hanging with friends, grabbing food, doing homework with people, and kept busy on campus. I even would sometimes stay on campus with my friends when I just didn’t want to be at home! Also commuting will not stop you from finding your home on campus.
What clubs or activities are you involved in on campus? I am a theatre arts major so I help out with the shows a lot and maybe next season I’ll be in one who knows! So I really enjoy doing that, but this semester I rushed for a Sorority and got a bid for Alpha Sigma Tau. Being a part of Greek Life has definitely made my college experience ten times better. I love all my sisters to death and I am in such an amazing community on campus. They are all so loving and supporting, I couldn’t imagine not being apart of Greek Life. It does suck a little because corona had postponed our initiation until the fall, but we all stay very close in touch and are so excited for next semester. We Zoom a lot too.
What advice do you have for future freshmen looking at colleges right now? Looking at colleges is going to be really hard right now due to everything going on in the world. It’s hard to visit campus’s and get a tour, I also know that it matters to you. Don’t stress about where you’re going too hard, I know that it is a very stressful process. I say keep your options open because you never know, you could fall in love with a school you didn’t even give a second thought. I can say this from my stand point of being a commuter, It’s so close to my house I didn’t even want to go here until I gave it a chance. I got into my #1 school and still chose Rowan because I ended up falling in love with it. Don’t be scared if you plan on commuting either, it won’t stop you from doing anything! Just keep up the grades you having going for you now and focus on what you’re looking for. The process is worth it I promise.
What are you most looking forward to next year at Rowan? The biggest thing I am looking forward to next year is definitely seeing all my friends again and having them come back home to Rowan. I miss them so much and online classes kind of suck but the world is going through a tough time right now. I also cannot wait for my classes in the fall! I am taking some cool classes like Singing for the Actor and Fundamentals of Tap. I cannot wait to learn to tap dance. I also am so excited for fall and spring recruitment, I can’t wait to be apart of that. Next semester can’t come any sooner.

First Year Voices: Shahir Mollah Talks Cars & Mechanical Engineering
Today’s (FRESH)man Voices features Shahir Mollah, a mechanical engineering from Galloway, NJ (Atlantic County) who lived in Mullica Hall until COVID-19 shut down the campus.
What inspired you to choose your major? I’ve always been a big car guy. Junior year of high school I wanted to build a car, which inspired my decision to become a mechanical engineer and add an automotive engineering concentration.
How does your involvement with SAE/Motorsports help you professionally? In SAE/Motorsports, we get hands-on experience 
designing a motorsport vehicle, then travel to compete the car in a bunch of races. This process prepares me for my future in automotive engineering and allows me to meet like-minded people.
Dream car company you’d work for? Mazda or Ferrari!
What’s the best decision you’ve made since you got to college? Applying for a specialization in automotive engineering because my senior year I’ll be able to take courses specifically about how to engineer and manufacture cars.
What advice would you give your high school self about choosing a college? Choose an affordable and quality program that best fits your major.

Today we feature freshman (soon-to-be sophomore) Casey Hofacker, a psychology major from Lindenwold, NJ (Camden County), who lived in Holly Pointe Commons until COVID-19 shut down the campus.
What did you most enjoy your freshman year at Rowan? What I enjoyed most about my freshman year was meeting my awesome friends and exploring my major.
How do you create the “away at school” feeling if your home is close to Rowan? The way I create the away at school feeling at home is by acting as if I were still at school and sitting at my desk to do my homework or when we could still go out is going to a local coffee shop to sit and do my work.
What clubs or activities are you involved in on campus? I play club field hockey and I love my team. It’s awesome they are amazing people who are accepting of everybody.
What advice do you have for future freshmen looking at colleges right now? Some advice that I have for incoming freshmen is to make sure that you manage your time wisely but also make sure to relax and have fun and to get involved on campus.
What are you most looking forward to next year at Rowan? I’m going to start taking classes for my minor and also take a sign language class – I have always wanted to learn it.

First Year Voices: Bella Hargesheimer Reflects on Freshman Year
Today we speak to Bella Hargesheimer, a freshman Spanish major from Philadelphia, PA wrapping up her first year. She lived on campus in Holly Pointe this school year.
What is one moment you’ve had with a club or a group of friends that made you feel like Rowan is “home”? Second semester I applied to be a Peer Referral and Orientation Staff (PROS) member and part of training was a weekend camping retreat. We did so many team bonding exercises and fun activities and I finally felt that I had found my group. Obviously for our job we were supposed to be really close and we’re going to be living with each other for two months over the summer and in that weekend I had found my Rowan family.
What was your favorite roommate moment or your favorite moment with friends this year? My favorite roommate moment was right before winter break. My roommate and I were born two days apart so we planned a joint party in the Pod lounge and we had so much fun planning it. December is also just a great month and every time I’d walk into the room she was blasting Christmas music and we’d just sing and dance.
What is one thing about Rowan that was a happy surprise for you? One thing about Rowan that was a happy surprise for me was the campus is a lot smaller than I thought. For some reason on the tour I thought Rowan was huge. I was like I’m never going to get the hang of this, everything is extremely far apart and this is too disorienting. Then I moved onto campus and realized everything is a lot closer than I thought and getting from place to place is a lot less of a hassle than I had expected it was going to be.

What did you most enjoy your freshman year at Rowan? My first semester was challenging, and I often doubted my talent and strength, but this semester I can already see some growth in my artistry. It makes me really excited for the next three years.
Could you share with one happy moment you had with friends, professors or other members of the Rowan community that made you realize Rowan felt like “home”? My birthday is in November. I was really missing my friends and family. My new friend at Rowan, Mattie Millet, had helped plan a surprise dinner with all of my closest peers at Rowan and my best friend from home. I felt incredibly cared for and supported within this community that was so new to me.
What advice do you have for future freshmen looking at colleges right now? I would tell incoming freshmen to look for schools where both the students and professors’ beliefs can coalesce with your own. I decided on Rowan because I felt really comfortable shadowing. The students spoke like me, we had a shared sense of humor etc. It sounds cliche but it really felt like home.
What are you most looking forward to next year at Rowan? I’m looking forward to rooming with three other talented, empowered women that I’m proud to call my friends, and I’m really excited for Rowan’s upcoming main stage season.

How do you create the “away at school” feeling if your home is close to Rowan?
I create the “away at school” feeling through planning my day around my schoolwork.
What advice do you have for future freshmen looking at colleges right now?
Don’t overwhelm yourself. The bigger and more well-known school may be appealing, but the smaller and lesser-known school will make the transition to college life much easier.
What are you most looking forward to next year at Rowan?
The thing I am looking forward to the most would be getting back to more art classes.

First Year Voices: Biochemistry Major Malique Prescott
Freshman Malique Prescott, a Biochemistry major from Bridgeton, NJ (Cumberland County) who lived in Evergreen Hall until campus closed due to COVID-19, reflects on his first year as a Rowan student.
What was one way you met friends this year? One way I met my college family was through the ASCEND program (PCI) and my peers in my dorm. Then I relinked with some people I had met during orientation. Now I’m just meeting people by networking through those I already know.
What is something you’re looking forward to at Rowan next year? Next semester I plan on finishing it completely without the help of a virus. I also plan on getting more involved with the campus community and making a presence for myself and possibly joining a few organizations.
What would you tell a future student who is interested in Rowan? As for advice to a future student, I would tell them to not be too shy and worry about it. You can put yourself out there because everyone on campus is loving and accepting. And to also have fun, you are only a freshman in college once.

What did you most enjoy your freshman year at Rowan?
What I enjoyed most about my freshman year was all of the welcome events in the beginning of the year. With all of the food truck festivals and little events at Holly Pointe, I was able to meet some great people really fast!
Could you share with one happy moment you had with friends, professors or other members of the Rowan community that made you realize Rowan felt like “home”?
One of the happiest moments this year was when I decided to switch my major to theatre. I was nervous, but everyone in the department was super welcoming and really helped me feel like Rowan was my home.
What advice do you have for future freshmen looking at colleges right now?
Advice I have for future freshmen is: be yourself and stay optimistic. Go in to college with a positive view, it makes it much easier to enjoy the transition and make friends.
What are you most looking forward to next year at Rowan?
Even though my first year was cut short, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my friends again and having even more fun at Rowan next year!

First Year Voices: Football & Friendship
“We’ve been playing football together since we were 6,” says freshman Jared Armitage, a business management major from Estell Manor, NJ (Atlantic County) of his Magnolia Hall roommate, Chris Doughty of Buena, NJ (Atlantic County).
“We both played for Rowan this year,” Jared continues. It was fun living with someone he’s known since childhood, he says. “It was never boring. We just goof around with everyone in the dorm, playing poker. My favorite memory from this year is goofing off in the dorms. Our whole floor in Magnolia – and someone brought water guns. We started spraying each other, and getting water bottles and throwing them at each other. (We cleaned it up, of course.)”
At orientation, Jared’s randomly assigned roommate was Pavneet Singh, a freshman entrepreneurship major from Carteret, NJ (Middlesex County.)
Jared shares, “We didn’t really talk much to each other at first. But, then we were both sitting there bored at 1:00 in the morning and said, ‘Hey, do you want to do something funny?’ and we ran around the hallways.”
Along the way, the friends met Jeron, known as Smooth (on left). Jared says, “Chris met him here, but he lives close to us at home. Pretty sure we played football against him in school, but we didn’t know it. “
Next year Jared and Chris will commute from home, instead of living on campus. “I’m going to carpool with Chris,” says Jared, “because I’ll drive past Chris to get to school.”

First Year Voices: Anjeliah Chiodo
Our spotlight (FRESH)man Voices this week is Anjeliah Chiodo. I had the wonderful opportunity to write a story about her. She is an iconic Instagram influencer with 25.1k followers.
This first-generation college student let us have the amazing chance to get some insight on herself, her lifestyle and her opinions on some topics. Her major is Entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur is person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. So cool, what a great goal!
Her hometown is Pine Hill, NJ (Camden County) … which is not too far from Glassboro! Anjeliah is also 18 years old.
She chose to live on campus. She lived in Evergreen Hall before they shut the campus down due to coronavirus.
Sometimes freshmen have a hard time transitioning into college, but not Anjeliah! She went through a six-week program in the summer before starting her first fall semester called the Pre-College Institute (PCI), a program to help students financially and academically. In this program, a student can be considered an EOF student or a RISE student, and she was considered a RISE student. She stated how this program gave her a lot of structure, it taught her how to prioritize, manage her time with a full schedule (with classes, study sessions, meals, meetings, extra activities), how to become organized, and also helped her get used to the campus life. She also met a lot of people — people who she is still friends with to this day and also very important people that helped build her network … how awesome? During these six weeks, they took everyone’s phones, which many students were mad about, but she didn’t mind at all because it forced her to talk to other people (which built genuine relationships without the social media). This brought her out of her shell, and helped her look elsewhere for fun activities rather than social media!
Anjeliah’s goal is to be a successful serial entrepreneur, she wants to own several different businesses, like a coffee shop, tattoo shop, nail salon, restaurant, and most importantly a retail store (clothing brand), while also modeling for her very own clothing brand. She has decided to take a step forward, start small by taking baby steps, and start her own lip gloss line, called Anjel Allure, (right now it is under construction). So please, stay tuned!!! I’d love to try it myself. For her short term goals, right now she is working as a bank teller at TD Bank, and she also hope to get promoted as much as possible before she started her own future business.
Anjeliah has many hobbies such as shopping, having photoshoots, exercising/lifting, eating, taking pictures to post on Instagram/promoting brands as an ambassador, making lip gloss, coming up with creative ideas for a future business, drawing self portraits with charcoal and chalk, playing the piano, saxophone, and clarinet, working on hair/skin care, playing tennis. Talk about well rounded!!! A successful student, and someone who loves her hobbies. 
Rowan was always her third choice when picking where to go for college, but it turned out to be the best decision she’s ever made because of the great people that she’s met, the opportunities she has come across, and the events that she has got involved in that exposed me to a lot of publicity. The reason she came to Rowan was because they offered her more money than the other universities, especially when she became a RISE student. At first, she was told that she was not eligible to be an EOF student (when grants are given to low-income students, and their grades are high enough, so they can attend school), she realized that because of that, she won’t be able to afford to go to Rowan…and she felt lost, like the only other option she had was community college. However, ONE very important person at Rowan went above and beyond to help her become a RISE student (when a scholarship is given to students whose household income is too low, but too high to meet the requirements of an EOF student, and their grades are superior and exceptional). Therefore, she made it into the ASCEND program for the summer, and was able to afford to go to Rowan. This showed her how one person can make a great impact on her life, and it showed her how much they cared for her to do that. How wonderful!
She is also involved in the Beauty in Distress Club, CEO Club: Collegiate Entrepreneur Organization, Society for the Advancement of Management club, Student University Programmers, MOCA: Men of Color Alliance Organization, Keep the Code Organization (she is the Event Coordinator), Harley Flack Mentoring Program, and the Bronze Leadership Program. These clubs are definitely something for any one at Rowan looking to gain some more opportunities with campus.
I also wanted to ask Anjeliah about her opinions on this pandemic going on in the world right now. She honestly feels like people want to get sick because no one is staying home. Working at TD Bank, she is constantly being exposed to people all time, and it is not helping when people like to be out of their homes and endanger their health & safety and her own. She also believes that people should take advantage of this time of staying at home and pick up a hobby, eat healthy, exercise, start a new routine, read a book, etc. People can be doing anything else besides leaving their home. They do not realize that this virus spreads fast, and by being out, they are also threatening the health & safety of others. And for the people that are sick, she is sorry for their struggles and for their pain, and she hopes they are fighting with all of their strength to stay strong. As far as for the people who have lost loved ones due to COVID-19, she is very sorry for their loss and she cannot imagine what they are going through. And for the people that are still living healthy, she hopes they are appreciating that, she wishes for them to recognize that they are helping prevent the virus by staying home, and that we are all alone in this together. #alonetogether

Academic and Social Clubs: I am the Student Government Association representative for the Atomik Legacy Dance Crew, and I am involved with MOCA, which is the Men of Color Alliance.
What inspired you to choose your major? Senior year of high school I applied to Rowan through the Common App. I had no clue what I wanted to do as a major. I looked through my options and saw that dance was an option for a major. I talked to my dance teacher, and my dance teacher said go for it. You should audition. So I did and I love going to school for what I love.
How does your field impact the world? What impact would you like to have on the world in your field? Not a lot of us dancers can truly express ourselves through words. We express ourselves through our body art. A lot of people can relate to not speaking on certain things. A dancer can give her entire life story through a show. For me, dance is my peace. Everyone in the world should find their peace in some way, and dancers give people the courage to do so. Dance is physically and emotionally draining, and we go for it every day.
What advice would you give your high school self about choosing a college? It’s OK to stay close to home because you make your own life at college. You can make your home wherever you are. I’m 45 minutes away from home and I barely go home because my home is at Rowan.
Tell us about your transition into college and how you pushed through any challenges. I automatically connected to everyone at Pre-College Institute (PCI). I was nervous, but I knew everyone from PCI had my back. I knew I had mentors there and that I could ask for help if I needed it. In the mix of doing the hard academic bootcamp at PCI, you get a family. I live in Evergreen with my PCI family. I walk into the ASCEND office and I feel at home. I can’t imagine my college experience without it. We did a lot of self growth activities and it taught me how to be a good student.
I took an Elements of Dance class with Paule Turner, the theatre and dance department chair, during PCI, which helped me transition into the dance department at Rowan. Paule said that him having me as a student in the summer proved to him and showed him that I deserved to be here as a dance major. I knew the department and Paule so I felt a step ahead from the other freshmen dance majors when college started.

Today, we talk to Dylan Snyder, a freshman Chemical Engineering major from Wilmington, Delaware.
How has your freshman year at Rowan been so far?
“Freshman year has been great! It is so much more interesting than high school. I’ve gotten so many new phone numbers and made so many new friends. If you get yourself out there, you can create the best experience at college.
Have you joined any clubs yet?
“Yes! I am currently a part of five clubs: The Rowan Alternative Music Club, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, MMA Club, Karate and Self-Defense Club and Student University Programmers (SUP). In that club, we plan a lot of the campus and charity events.”
How have you been adjusting to college life?
“I’ve adjusted pretty quickly. It’s a different rhythm, living on your own, for sure. If you’ve ever held a job, it’s similar to that. You just need to be responsible and manage your time well. As an engineering student, I’m constantly complaining about your lack of time; but as long as you know how much time to put aside for yourself and what you need to get done, it’s really smooth sailing. All that matters is that you’re interested in what you’re doing.”
What are some of your favorite spots on campus?
“Favorite spots on campus? Honestly, the beautiful pond out back behind Rowan Hall. The Market Place in the Student Center is really nice too. The Student Center is where all of college life happens at. Most of the clubs will meet around there. Mariachi Grill and Dawn to Dusk on Rowan Boulevard are also some of my favorite spots.”
What is one piece of advice you can give to incoming freshman?
“Don’t be afraid of anything. Go do everything and whatever you’re interested in. I signed up for emails for at least 50 clubs my first day! It’s funny, as soon as you get yourself out there you start making so many new friends. Don’t be afraid to be friendly, get out there, meet new people. Just go for it!”

First Year Voices: An Entrepreneurship Major Prepares to Launch a Lip Gloss Line
Meet Anjeliah Williams, a freshman majoring in Entrepreneurship, who also attended the Pre-College Institute (PCI) this summer. Anjeliah is from Sicklerville, NJ (Camden County), and she’s about to launch her own lip gloss line called “Anjel Allure.”
Anjeliah decided to major in entrepreneurship because growing up she did not know what she wanted to do but knew she did not like to work for others.
“I realized I wanted be my own boss and I thought entrepreneurship was a great major,” she says.
Anjeliah plans on opening other businesses in the future. “Later on in life, I want to own other small businesses like a coffee shop, a tattoo shop and a nail salon,” she adds.
“Don’t listen to people who are trying to put your idea down,” Anjeliah says. “They might say that it’s a horrible idea or it’s too much money, but If you keep a growth mindset and not a fixed mindset, then you can literally do anything.”

First Year Voices: Music Industry Student’s Journey from Delaware to New Jersey
“If you’re into music, this school is awesome!” says Devin Saienni, a freshman Music Industry major with a concentration in Music Technology from Wilmington, Delaware (New Castle County). He currently lives in Mimosa Hall and is a first-generation college student.
Devin says he came to Rowan specifically for the music program, and he heavily credits his humble experiences here so far to his professors.
When asked about his shift from living in Delaware to New Jersey, he said the people here make him feel right at home. He also wasn’t nervous at all coming into college because he knew a few people already.
His best advice to future students is to “tour your schools” and “really put your full focus on really finding out what school fits you.”

What first surprised you about Rowan?
“I think how nice everyone is, because they say that northerners aren’t always the nicest. It’s a stereotype, but that’s not true. Everyone, especially within the Theatre and Dance Department, has been really sweet and encouraging.”
How is New Jersey different from Mississippi?
“Everybody here is very into what they are doing. It’s a very dedicated space for theatre. In high school, there are so many people that do theatre who are just doing it for the credit, and now it’s so nice to be surrounded by people who are just as passionate about theatre as I am. Students care so much.
“I guess there’s an energy that’s different, where everyone’s got something to do.
Whereas in the south, everyone’s kind of like content with living in their hometown forever and staying put. I feel like up north there’s kind of a ‘go-getter attitude,’ where everyone’s like ‘Let me go make a career for myself’ or ‘Let me shape my own path.’ Yeah, it is more fast-paced, and it’s very refreshing.
“Also, my teachers are more chill and laid back. There is a respect thing — where it could just be like a college thing or a north vs. south kind of thing. But it’s like the teachers understand that we’re people, and it’s not like ‘I’m your elder, so you have to respect me.’ Oh, and people don’t say ‘yes, m’am’ or ‘yes, sir.’ It’s such a weird feeling because I’m so used to saying those things.
“In the south, there’s an expectation for younger generations to speak that way to older generations. But here, there’s just a general respect for everyone. And Rowan is very progressive, so it made me super happy to see that people were using pronouns to introduce themselves and address each other. It just felt new and right.”

First Year Voices: Public Relations Major Rachel Rumsby
Ten toes in. This is the motto of First-Year Connection: Leadership, and how I tried to live during my transition into college. For me, this meant getting as involved as possible to meet a lot of people and get acclimated to campus.
The first home I found on campus was First Year Connection: Leadership (FCL). This is a four-day program for freshmen and transfer students that focuses on kickstarting your leadership journey at Rowan. This program allowed me to move into Mimosa, my freshman dorm, early, which really set me up for success here at Rowan. By the time the semester started, I had 40 new friends and was all moved in! FCL also jump-started my leadership Rowan career, where I am currently working on my Bronze Leadership Certificate. I still hang out with these people now, even though FCL ended months ago!
The second group that I joined at Rowan is Student University Programmers (SUP). SUP is a group that makes programs and events happen for students by students here at Rowan. One of the FCL mentors is the president of SUP, and my RA is the Director of Charitable Events for SUP, and they really encouraged me to join. I don’t attend every event or meeting, but when I do they are always super friendly.
Joining Rowan’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America, a national pre-professional organization, and PRaction, Rowan’s student-run public relations firm, also helped me in my transition to Rowan.
Being on a team for a PRaction client as a freshman really makes me feel like I am going to be professionally prepared after leaving Rowan. I am learning about the profession that I would like to go into, so I can be sure that public relations is actually what I want to do.
My team on-campus is the Crew Club team. We are an up-and-coming club that welcomes people of any skill level in rowing. We are working toward earning enough money to buy a boat so that we can start competing. We are preparing to compete by working out, erging (rowing on a machine) and team bonding. I have found the members of the crew team to be my closest friends on campus. We are always looking for reasons to be together!
All of these clubs are family because they have helped me transition into having a successful start at Rowan. However, my college experience would be very different if I didn’t live on campus. My RA has been amazing with helping me through everything from roommate issues to how to use the laundry machine. My floormates are also becoming like family to me as well. I am so thankful to have this experience living on campus with them.

Meet Kelly Kirk, a freshman from Riverside, NJ (Burlington County). Kelly, a Bioinformatics major, lives in Holly Pointe Commons.
Kelly loves looking forward to going to the Equestrian Club! She attends the club during the weekend, where they practice and compete with other schools on performance.
When asked if she was ever nervous with starting Rowan, Kelly says she was never nervous but was instead very excited to begin college life!
Some advice Kelly would give to her high school self about college is, “You have a lot more time on your hands and need to learn how to budget that better.”

What has been the best part of your freshman year so far?
Definitely making new South Jersey friends and joining the Rowan Softball team! Joining the team was one of my main goals, so it was super exciting to make the team.
Any advice to future students?
Get the unlimited meal plan. The smoothies on-campus are the best. And don’t let your schoolwork pile up! Do it way before it’s due so you don’t have to rush to get it done later. Also, try not to go home every weekend.

Meet Elizabeth Hudak, a freshman Radio/TV/Film major from Manchester, NJ (Ocean County). She moved into Holly Pointe Commons in September.
Elizabeth says attending freshmen orientation made it easier to meet people once she started on campus this fall. She was happily surprised at “how easily I made friends and how open everybody was to getting to know one another.”
Campus life is one of her favorite aspects of Rowan because she feels it makes it so that there’s always something to do every day.

First Year Voices: Computer Science Major Monica Torres
Meet Monica Torres, a Jersey City (Hudson County) native and Computer Science major who attended the Pre-College Institute (PCI) this summer.
What are one or two takeaways you got from the PCI program? “I think I’ve learned a lot more about time management. I’m usually a morning person. I’ve learned to juggle my free time wisely, like when it comes to studying for a test or when I need to rest … every little break I get, I use it wisely.
“PCI seems stressful, but it’s actually pretty fun, especially when you get to know your classmates. I made a bunch of great friends here.”
What are you looking most forward to coming into your freshman year? “I’m definitely looking forward to getting my hands on computers! Not only am I Hispanic but the fact that I’m one of only a few girls in the major … I want to show people that it doesn’t matter what gender you are, you can follow your dreams.”

First Year Voices: Joining Her Cousins at Rowan
After hearing good things about Rowan’s engineering program and with two cousins already here, Rowan was a natural choice for incoming freshman Krishna Barot.
Meeting people and forming the beginnings of lifelong friendships has been the highlight of Krishna’s summer at Rowan University. The first generation college student, from Galloway, NJ (Atlantic County), spent six weeks on campus as a part of the Pre-College Institute (PCI), an academic/residential program to better prepare freshmen for college.
When Krishna returns to campus in September, she’ll have already earned three college credits through PCI, will have a core group of friends she’ll be reunited with and will already have a familiarity with campus. A civil engineering major, Krishna will live in Evergreen Hall.
In September, Krishna says, “I’m most looking forward to learning about the different clubs and activities to join.”

First Year Voices: Growing Up With Rowan
As Silas Alston grew up, he watched Rowan University grow up, too.
“I remember campus before half these buildings were here,” the incoming freshman says. “Whitney, Holly Pointe, Rowan Boulevard, Barnes & Noble — I remember all of them coming up.”
With many family connections to Rowan, Silas spent much of his childhood visiting campus. Now, as an incoming freshman, he’s beginning to see Rowan through fresh eyes.
This summer Silas earned three college credits through Rowan’s Pre-College Institute (PCI), a six-week academic/residential program to better prepare freshmen for college.
The New Castle, DE, resident will live on campus in Mullica Hall his freshman year. An exploratory studies major, Silas is looking forward to finding a major and a career he’s interested in. “I’m considering some type of engineering or athletic training,” he says.

First Year Voices: Twins Dillon and Chase Weigand
Watch out, world! These incoming freshmen — Chase Weigand (left) and Dillon Weigand (right) of Ocean Gate, NJ (Ocean County) — are ready to start their four years at Rowan in just a few months. We caught up with them today as they visited campus for the first time, ready to put down a deposit with their family.
First-generation college students, Chase will major in biological sciences within the College of Science & Mathematics and Dillon will major in biomedical engineering within the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering.
How did they end up at Rowan? “It just kinda happened,” Chase says — which is the case for so many students. The brothers looked at other state schools, but ultimately decided on Rowan.
They decided not to room together and are actively seeking roommates for the upcoming year. Both share that the biggest thing they’re looking forward to in September is getting to know campus and make new friends.
